The use of stem cells in orthopedics and sports medicine is very broad. Application of stem cells is helpful:
– in degenerative changes in the joints, especially the knee, hip, shoulder joints.- in treating the results of injuries and trauma of: tendons, muscles, articular cartilage, meniscus and ligaments, because it speeds up the regeneration of these structures.
– after reconstruction procedures, e.g. reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the articular cartilage, because it accelerates implant fixation
Stem cells are the most primitive cells that build the structure of a living organism. They show great potential for multiplication and a unique ability to transform into specialized cells through rebuilding the damaged structure. These unique features allow the use of stem cells in modern medicine.
Among the distinguished types of stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) deserve the most attention, they are most often used in regenerative medicine and cell therapies. These cells undergo typical differentiation into cells of mesodermal origin: osteocytes (bone cells), chondrocytes (cartilage cells), and myocytes (muscle cells). We can isolate the cells from bone marrow and adipose tissue.
Application of stem cells finally regenerates the damaged joints, tendons, muscles and ligaments. They restore proper function and reduce pain.
The procedure of applying stem cells is usually performed under short general anesthesia. The treatment essentially consists of three steps.
In the first stage, bone marrow or adipose tissue is collected. The bone marrow is usually extracted the hip bone. Fat tissue is collected from the abdominal fold. Next, the extracted material is placed on a specialized separator (machine for separating stem cells from other components of the bone marrow or fat).
In our Hospital we perform procedures with the help of the most modern computer stem separators – Angel System and UNiStation. The process of separation is fully closed, sterile and safe. In the last stage of the procedure, after processing, the stem cell preparation is injected with an injured, damaged or painful place.
The rehabilitation of the patients begins the day after surgery. The rehabilitation program is adjusted according to the type of illness.
